It was now seven months since the contretemps clouds and waves of blood frozen winds of sorrow swept over the home of Samuel and the entire Coleman street and its environ.
It had not been easy for Samuel to bear the misfortune but he had lived through it bravely, and was now bringing himself up to forge ahead.
And on Coleman street, every now and then people's minds still flashed back to that horrendous time, but the intensity of the cringe it sent into them had worn down and everyone was looking ahead to calm and pleasant days.Nobody prayed to see such dreadful things happening again.
But the mystery surrounding those obnoxious deaths still hung in the air as nobody, not even the police had any clue of the motives nor who did them, hence,to unravening them.
The police Area Commander moved by the degree and mystery surrounding the crime, had personally visited Pastor Samuel and Coleman street himeslf and had given the police an order to find the perpetrator as fast as they could.
But after few weeks of fruitless effort, the police had wane their investigations and pusuite of the ghosty perpetrator.
DEJAVU
As things began taking a new happy faze,Pastor Samuel took in his eleven years old nephew,Micheal to live with him and his other children after moving to his own building further down the street. And to make the children have a balance parental care and affections,he had hired a midle-age maid to take care of them.
Tonia was a forty-eight years old woman and from Akwa Ibom state. She was once a club prowler and had made good fortune from the business, but unfortunately for her,she lost all she had got to one deceiver who had pointlessly promised to marry her only for him to disappear when he had laid his hands on her money. And after that sad experience, things had never been the same with her again. And with age tell on her,she fund it difficult to compete with the younger ones who had dived into the trade. And men not finding her body any more crazy amorous satifying worth, she was forced to retire.
Tonia was a woman endeared with a great measure of motherly mien, kind, caring and gentle. She was giving the children all there was to give as a mother, and the children loved her so much that hardly could anyone knew she was not their real mother.
Samuel was happy that Tonia had lived up to his expectation, she had filled the vaccum the death of their mother had created in them. His initial fear of having to entrust them into the hand of a total stranger had been gotten over,he was now relaxed with free mind.
He spend most of his time in the church ministering and scarcely seen at home.
One dew devoured tuesday morning Tonia was taking the children to the school bus point, which was about thirty minutes walk through a deserted untared road flanked on both sides by uncompleted buildings swallowed up by scrubs and bushes.
It was about 6.35am,but the weather was still dark and the road lonely.Tonia and the children walked on without fear.It had been a road they had been accustomed to,and there was no reason for any fear.
But this particular morning, neither Tonia nor the children, chattering away, knew of the invisible eyes trailing after them as they went.
They got to the main road where they met and joined other children and some of the parents waiting for the school bus to arrive.
The bus came around 7.05am and the children excitedly ran in,waving goodbye to their parents as the bus zoomed off.
Tonia waved back to her wards as she stood watching the bus untill it disappeared in the early morning traffic, then she started back home.
This had became a constant ritual in her life since she had taken up the kids sitter job.And the motherly passion inside her had always made her felt like the children were hers. And she was prepared to do anything to protect and keep them happy.
The weather was now brightening up and the mist was abating and she can see the surroundings more clearly, but the road was still empty of visible human presence and movements. But this was an understatement. It wasn't totally empty in the real sense, because the same formless being which had watched them pass was still around and watching her as she strolled back.
Before she got home Pastor Samuel had left for the church.Tonia continued her morning domestic works, sweeping and straighting out the rooms.
She was in the children's room when she felt a sudden surge of spasm in her body, then began to sweat profously, her head was like increasing in size becoming bigger and bigger. Then she felt it was going to explode, she girdled it with her hands and began to scream but no audible sounds came out, rather an unwarranted giddiness seized her and she collapsed to the floor. And then she saw the room closing in on her.
But like a man in the throes of struggling to give a last fight-off of a horrible death, she screamed again with all her strenght, and this time a loud deafening sound echoed through the whole house.
She came suddenly alive, and found herself standing all alone in the middle of the room. She was confused. She looked around her,and everything in the room was as normal as it was.
"This must be a dream".She said to herself. But as she said this,a voice she could not hear answered her saying...,"It was not a dream woman,it's real".And unaware of the sneering words, she knelt down beside the bed and began to pray.
Around noon she took a commercial bike to the church to tell Pastor Samuel what had happened to her.
Pastor Samuel was in the auditorium attending spiritually to some worshippers who had came to seek counselling and God' favour.Tonia went to wait for him in the pastor's office at the back of the main building. There, she met his secretary a mild looking young girl sitting on an upholstered office chair fussing over the desktop computer sitting in front her on a table litetred with pamphlets and journals.
"Welcome ma'am",the girl got onto her feet greeting her warmly and indicated an empty settee at the edge of the big and well furnished office for her to sit down"
"Thank you"
"Pastor is in the church ma",she said.
"I know.And don't worry,pastor is aware of my presence"
"Okay ma".And she sat back to her work.
Fifteen minutes later,Pastor Samuel came in and sat on his table. The girl went out.And without wasting time,Tonia narrated the strange experience she went through at home.
Pastor Samuel was speechless as he listened through her story. And finally he told her to put it off her mind and see it as a mere hallucination.
Tonia left the church around 2.35pm to pick the kids from the school bus point.
On thursday afternoon,Micheal's mother called Pastor Samuel on phone asking for the kids to come and spend the weekend with her in Lagos.Pastor Samuel agreed and when he got home from church that evening he told the children about the verbal invitation, and they were thrilled.
And the following day, friday,Tonia and the kids left for Lagos at around 5.00pm.
Pastor Samuel came back from church around 8.00pm,and for the first time since he and the kids moved in to the house after the tragic death of their mother,he felt how big, lonely and ghosty the four bedroomed flat apartment could be without them around. And the coldness was beyond his comfort,he whished he had not promised his sister to send them over.
And with cold feet in the dark corridor,he moved to the light switch on the wall and switched on the bulbs. Then went to his room.He removed his suit and wearing only boxer-short,he went to the bathroom to freshing up.
It was when he came out and going back to his room he saw it...the red drops on the floor! It was evidently fresh and wasn't there before, otherwise he wouldn't had missed seeing it.He stooped to examine it with the tip of his finger. And indeed,it was blood! But where had it come from?He got straight up looking himself all over. But he found no fresh cut or wound on his body.
He started tracing the droplets which ran towards the children's room and stopped few steps before the door, then continued towards Tonia's room at the far end of the short corridor.Samuel now with unsettled mind pushed the children's room door opened, switched on the light and scrutinizing the entire room mechanically. But everything seemed to be in order. He switched off the light, closed the door back and continued his tracing the blood droplets which also came to an abrupt stop few steps before Tonia's door.Grasping the knob,he pushed but the door was locked.
And his mind not appreciating what he was experiencing,he hurried back to his room and called Tonia through his mobile phone.
Tonia came on line after her phone rang a couple of times. He asked her if any of the kids or her had any accidential cut while in the house. But she said no in a flat tune. And tried to know what the matter was,but he had told her not to worry. And his mind now more efface of peace,he started to sweet.
He knelt bedside the bed and went into a long fervour prayer.
And that night after mobbing the blood off the floor, and went to bed,he could not find sleep. His mind was predisposed of an imminent danger, and as such went wandering without a definate destination.
Tonia and the kids came back on sunday evening.
Samuel was at the church offciating the evening service which came to a close at 7.00pm.He had retired to his office thereafter. And at around 7.45pm he decided to go to the church crept where files and other documents were kept.
It was a well defined room, luminous with two 60w white bulbs and outer demacated to hold lines of wooden shelves stacked with books and files.
Pastor Samuel mooch towards the far right and stood afront an array of files. From the lot he tried to retrieve one.But as he pulled it,it came along with streams of red slime which splashed all over the floor, his trouser and shoe.Horrified he let go of the file and jumped back,it fell into the pond of blood on the floor.
"Oh my God!"
"Yes my son...here am i".The words reverbrated as if spoken from a deep hollow pit.He cowered aside to find the voice owner, but he saw nobody.Entwined in fear,he made towards the door.As he fruitlessly endevoured to pull the door opened a silhouette fell over him.
Without caring to know what it was,he pulled harder at the door, but it refused to yield. Now knowing he was stucked,he turned to look behind...
And there he was, standing tall and pompously like the image in Nebuchadnezzar's dream.Eyes blazing like fire,a gold crown worn round two gold ringged horns on his head, and decked in a long red wool garment was his G.O.!
Pastor Samuel could not believe his eyes nor believe he was still on earth and in the crypt of the church building. It was as if he was in a trance beyond the heavens and seeing a strange vision.
But this was no vision. It was real.
"Don't be surprised Pastor...It's i,the supreme agent of the king of the Dark.Your time is up,and you're about to be offered as a finall sacrifice to my king".
"G.O!" Samuel exclaimed.
"Yes,i'm Rev.Lukas Akiede your General Overseer. And I'm the one behind all the travails in your life.I picked you because of your very verve and commitment to serve the True God which qualified you as a perfect sacrificial premium to my king for my pre-emenence among my competetors in the church business."
"Jesus!"
"But Jesus left you seven months ago when you accepted to accommondate my spiritual daughter in your home. And that fire that burnt her physical body to ashes is now consuming your home and children in the same way."
The terrifyiny words incited Samuel and with his heart in his mouth,he plunged all his weight on the door and it came off the hinges and fell outward. He ran into the now deserted dark street and sprinting home.He covered the 0.62 mile distance under fifteen minutes. And at the edge of his street he saw large crowds weeping and shouting as they look towards the house engulfed in an inferno with its thick smoke covering the air.
Before anyone could stop him Samuel rushed into the burning house. He knew his kids were trapped in there and he had to get them out.But he was choked by smoke along the corridor,he stumbled on something on the floor and fell headlong. He tried to feel with his hand what had brought him down. And it turned to be a body.As he groped around he discovered another body, then another...
Now,he could no longer feel anything else than the heat of the fire consuming him.And under the intense ravage of the fire, the house roof carved in on them.
The firemen was four hours late to arrive, then it was all over.
